During a STEM paper plane challenge, students had to construct a paper airplane that could carry cargo and glide more than 10 feet!  After two years in the making, Lower School students – with help from 5th grade students met their goal of raising $5,000 to purchase a Gift Ark through Heifer International! In November 2016, Greensboro Day School Lower School students learned about the democratic process by holding an election to vote on their favorite animal. Students were voting to decide which animal they would purchase to aid a community through Heifer International, a nonprofit organization working to eradicate hunger and poverty. In a turn of events, a write-in candidate of a complete ark of animals was nominated and won the election. Instead of funding a $250 (budgeted) expense, Gillian Goodman, Lower School Director was faced with a $5,000 unbudgeted expense. Instead of backing away from the challenge, the Lower School leader and students began to brainstorm how they could raise $5,000 to meet this goal. Since early 2017, students held a variety of fundraising activities to help reach their goal. From dance parties to piggy bank donations from helping with chores at home, the students diligently chiseled away at this massive goal. During the Lower School Closing ceremony, Mrs. Goodman was happy to announce that the goal was met!
