22 | Summer 2018 C ongratulations to Coach Kim Burroughs for winning his 400th career game as Head Coach of the Varsity Girls’ Soccer Team at GDS. His overall record at the conclusion of the season is 400-101- 40. From our research, Kim became the 7th high school girls’ soccer coach in the state of North Carolina to reach this milestone victory and is the 3rd active coach on the list. During Kim’s 28 seasons as Head Coach, the GDS Girls’ Soccer Program rose to national prominence. In 1997, the team finished 7th in the nation and in 1998, the team reached #1 in the polls, before finishing #2 in the final poll of the season. (We think we deserved #1). In 2005, the team finished #16 in the nation. Coach Burroughs has won 12 state championships (including 6 consecutive from ‘95-’00), more than any other coach in the history of GDS athletics. His teams have also won 19 PACIS conference championships. Coach Burroughs has received numerous coaching awards around the state and nation. This player exemplifies hard work and The Greensboro Day School Athletic Department recognizes two annual awards for coaches: The O.B. Teague, Jr. Memorial Handshake Award and Frank Brenner Coach’s Award. The O.B. Teague, Jr. Memorial Handshake Award is given annually to a coach or faculty member who has contributed greatly to the GDS Athletic Program. The 2018 recipient is John Watson, who has been a volunteer coach for the Varsity Baseball team for 3 years and has contributed tremendously to the growth of our student-athletes and the baseball program. The Frank Brenner Coach’s Award is given annually to recognize Frank Brenner’s dedication and commitment to excellence within the Greensboro Day School Athletic Department. This award is given to a person who represents teamwork, character, loyalty, and friendship. The 2018 recipient is Tory Bowers. dedication to her sport, and always demonstrates a positive attitude toward her team and coaches.
