During the 2018 Graduation ceremony on Friday, June 8, the James P. Hendrix, Jr. Award for Excellence in Teaching was presented. This award was established in honor of Greensboro Day School’s 4th headmaster and is presented annually at Graduation to the faculty member who exemplifies the highest standards of teaching and professionalism. Congratulations to Senora Iraida Fung, Upper School Spanish teacher who was named the 2018 Hendrix Award recipient. In her nominations, Ms. Fung was described as being a source of light every day … for everyone … She pours heart and soul into making sure that every class is full of learning. She truly cares about each and every one of us. During the Convocation Ceremony on Thursday, June 7 a member of the senior class was recognized with the Maureen B. Gerhardt Award. This award is presented annually to an Upper School student who best exemplifies the honor, personal integrity, responsible citizenship, and service to the community as articulated in the Greensboro Day School mission statement. Congratulations to Ellie Baldwin ’18 on her recognition as the 2018 Gerhardt Award recipient. She spends countless hours reading, writing, and making learning fun. A good teacher can inspire hope, ignite the imagination, and instill a love of learning and she does all three. Ms. Fung has a remarkable commitment to the success of each student, developing differentiated learning techniques … she exudes warmth, compassion, and hospitality and makes everyone feels valued and loved. The encouraging spirit combined with the command of the material provides for an incredibly effective learning environment. The Founders’ Award is presented annually at Graduation to the member of the graduating class who best exemplifies the characteristics of scholarship, sportsmanship, and leadership implicit in the founding of our School. Jacob is described as a scholar, athlete, artist, and leader. He will continue his education at Wake Forest University in the fall. The award was presented by Rev. Wayne Robinson ’76, one of Greensboro Day School’s first graduates during the 2018 Graduation ceremony on Friday, June 8.
