10 | Summer 2018 CAMPUS NEWS MRS. BETH DUNBAR earned a bachelor’s degree in Theater Arts Education from Catawba College where she also minored in English and Speech. She began her teaching career at Overlea Senior High School in Baltimore, Maryland where she taught drama and English from 1975-1980. She continued her career from 1983 - 1985 as an English and drama teacher at Moore Middle School in Florence, South Carolina and then moved to Greensboro where she taught both subjects at Kiser Middle School from 1985-1992. During her tenure at Kiser, she was recognized as the school’s Teacher of the Year and was one of the ten finalists for the GCS Teacher Excellence Award in two consecutive years. Beth began at GDS in 1992, when she was hired as the middle school 8th grade Beth Dunbar, Carol Alberson, and Kerensa Wooten retire from teaching after a combined 70 years at GDS Just another day in Mr. Martin’s earth science class as he teaches about igneous rocks and shares his own experiences of rock climbing around the world. Students are amazed and engaged! When a tornado touched down in Greensboro in April, members of the GDS community stepped in to help. From assembling care packages of toiletries, to volunteering with local support organizations, to donating needed food and supplies, raising funds from a middle school dunking booth, students and teachers were involved in efforts to assist those directly impacted. Through the generosity of the Charles A. McLendon Faculty and Parent Education Endowment, Greensboro Day School is able to bring a speaker annually for faculty, parent, and student education. The 2018 speaker was Dr. Borba, a parenting expert, educational psychologist, and author of Unselfie: Why Empathetic Kids Succeed in Our All-About-Me World. She spent two days on campus this April, working within the divisions and presenting to faculty. During her evening presentation, she reviewed the 9 essential habits to raise empathetic children. We welcomed more than 300 parents and visitors to hear her presentation. According to Dr. Borba, we can all learn from these 9 habits. 1. Can Recognize Feelings 2. Have Moral Identity 3. Understand the Needs of Others 4. Have a Moral Imagination 5. Can Keep Their Cool 6. Practice Kindness 7. Think “Us” not “Them” 8. Stick Their Necks Out 9. Want to Make a Difference Dr. Borba loved the “Do Something Kind Today” movement loved when 3rd graders presented her with her own DSKT shirt!
