Yet, Kathy Davis has accomplished such a feat. The many faculty with whom she’s worked and the thousands of students she has taught congratulate her as she finishes her last year at GDS before retiring in June. It is difficult to find enough superlatives to describe what Kathy has meant to Greensboro Day School throughout her tenure. Dedicated, thoughtful, caring, humble, all come to mind, but everyone has their own story of their relationship with Kathy. Kathy started her career at GDS as a student teacher in 1974. She enjoyed that experience so much that she made it her life’s career. In the early years, she coached about everything and, in her words, “We coached a sport even if we didn’t know what we were doing.” Today, she continues to be one of our most devoted Bengal fans and can be found at many of the Bengal Athletics’ events. When not teaching, Kathy was in charge of the prom for “more years than I care to recall, along with Cindy Stan and Tricia Fish,” was a student council advisor, ran the Orange Drive (Bob Satterfield said it was a big business run by two old teachers and some children), was a Cum Laude advisor, a National Honor Society advisor, and helped develop the honor code. She was on the Development Committee and Annual Fund Cabinet from 2005-07 and served as the school’s first Director of Alumni Programs. 1991, the Prowler Yearbook was dedicated to Mrs. Davis and Mrs. Carmen Redding. In that yearbook, it is quoted, “One might say that for her, teaching the subject matter is only secondary to teaching the student.”  In 1995, Mrs. Davis and Mr. Bob Satterfield were the first two recipients of the Brooks Sabbatical, and they visited the University of California at Berkeley to further their teaching skills. In 2010, Mrs. Davis was awarded the school’s highest teaching honor, the James. P. Hendrix Excellence in Teaching Award. Mrs. Davis received the ‘Rosalyn Tanner Orr Mentor of the Year’ Award, which is given to a teacher from Guilford County. Over the years, through word and example, Kathy has mentored young and experienced teachers in the art of building relationships with students.  As an extraordinary math teacher, her students have loved and respected her because they came to understand that her commitment to them and to their success was unwavering through her words and actions.
