Hale, Head of School Over the past several years, our school’s leadership team, trustees, teachers, staff, and students have been actively exploring the ways we can improve our efforts to be a more inclusive and equitable community. The founding of GDS reminds us this question has been an essential thread that runs throughout our school’s history. The book, Lo, Hearts Behold, written by Bob Demaree, Jr. eloquently captures the story of Greensboro Day School’s beginnings. As someone who joined the GDS community well into our school’s third decade, I have relied heavily on Bob’s telling of our history to provide a context for framing the story we are telling about our future. “As a year for starting a school, 1970 was suspect. All across the South segregation academies were springing up in church basements and metal buildings by the side of the road whose purpose, inspired by court-ordered busing plans, was at bottom to circumvent the law of the land. There was in Greensboro, though, a group of parents who had a broader, finer sense of what an independent school would be, who wanted to provide their children with educational excellence and at the same time be advocates for social justice in the community. (Demaree, 1995)” Today, little illustrates our ongoing commitment to foster a diverse, inclusive, equitable (DEI) school community more than the fact that over the past decade the face of Thank you to the Parents’ Association for a fun and festive afternoon!
