10 | Summer 2017 Congratulations to show choir members Laura Tutterow ’17, Caroline Moore ’17, Emily Brown ’17, Emily Dean ’17, Penny Hazlett ’18, Olivia Shoener ’18, Juliette Matthews ’18, Avery Blue ’17, Desmond McIntyre ’17, Jacob Breeden ’19 and Atticus Head ’20, led by Denise Johnson. 4th graders hosted their annual Poetry Coffee Shops for parents and guests. Students recited their own poetry as well as well-known pieces, and explained the different kinds of poetry they have studied. Parents enjoyed the creative themes of the Bengal Airlines, Olympics, and Hollywood Red Carpet. Students in 2nd grade complete a unit on economics and had the opportunity to purchase goods created by their classmates after receiving their “paycheck.” As part of the Brooks Sabbatical, teachers Kathy Gillespie and Jenna Gilfillan will travel to Jinja, Uganda to train teachers for two weeks. They will bring with them a class set of A Long Walk to Water, a novel that this year’s sixth graders read earlier this year. In preparation for the trip, 6th graders wrote book reviews of A Long Walk to Water and pasted them inside each book along with a photo. They also made an American “culture kit” containing items such as US currency, baseball cards, student The Lower School held a “Rock, Paper, Scissors” tournament to benefit the Gift Ark project. Each class winner competed in the school wide tournament. The winner was Troy Kacan in Mr. Buxenbaum’s fourth grade class. The Lower School raised $282 hosting this tournament and had a lot of fun! Yaxin Tu, ’17 won 2nd place in the 6th District’s Congressional Art Contest. Rep. Mark Walker presented her with the award at the Alamance County Arts Council. Yaxin’s piece, entitled Rainy Melody, is part of a digital art series she created, inspired by the imaginations of children. Yaxin is a student of Carey Jackson-Adams, and will be attending Maryland Institute College of Art in the fall. art, and local maps. CAMPUS NEWS The Upper School show choir class (in its first year of existence and in collaboration with Grimsley High School) placed 2nd in the NC Show Choir State competition narrowly missing the State Championship by the closest margin in the competition’s history.
