This award is presented annually during Commencement to the alumnus/a who best exhibits at least one of the following qualities: A extraordinary service to the City of Greensboro, the state of North Carolina, or the nation B. extraordinary distinction in one’s field of specialization or extraordinary service to society and corresponding tangible benefit to fellow citizens. Jeff Yurcisin ’93 certainly meets the aforementioned criteria and more. Jeff attended Greensboro Day School for nine years, graduating in 1993. He served as Student Body President and lettered in three sports, most proud of his four years playing shortstop for the baseball team. He also loved his time on stage, where he acted in nine different musical/dramas. Upon graduation, he chose to attend Princeton University. At Princeton, Jeff majored in economics and served as Senior Class President. After stints in the management consulting and the tech startup worlds, Jeff attended Harvard Business School, where he graduated with honors. For the last thirteen years, Jeff has been building e-commerce businesses with Amazon, the world’s most customer-centric company. For seven of those years, he led Shopbop as its CEO, and helped the company become the leading fashion boutique worldwide. Shopbop became the first retailer to ship product anywhere in the world for free in three days, delighting customers worldwide, and driving exponential growth. As a Vice President, Jeff more recently ran billion dollar Clothing businesses for Amazon, leading teams that seek to invent new solutions to delight customers. Today, he is responsible for creating and building brands that customers trust and love that are sold exclusively on Amazon. He is the son of Edward (deceased) and Nelia, former GDS Board of Trustee member and GDS Spanish teacher, and the younger brother of GDS graduates, Ed (1986) and John (1989). He lives in Seattle with his wife, three children, a mere two miles away from his mother and brother, John. Jeff Yurcisin, Class of 1993, has been chosen as the recipient of the 2017 Greensboro Day School Distinguished Alumni Award, announced at Commencement where he also gave the Commencement address.
